Installing Kitchen Cabinets
Installing kitchen cabinets can be a real chore for anyone to do. It is possible for the do it yourselfers to do it with the right planning though. It can be a real chore to make sure that everything is level, plumb, and flush the way that they should be. Let’s look at the steps needed to do this properly right now.
First off, if you need to remove old kitchen cabinets, then it is a good idea to do so as carefully as possible. A good order to follow is to remove the doors, drawers, and pull out the removable shelves. This will make the removal job far easier. Make sure you have a helper with you as you are removing them. Then you simply unscrew everything from each other, then the wall one by one. With this step over it is time to get to installing kitchen cabinets.
Installing kitchen cabinets is really a simple process of drawing out your proper guide lines, installing the cabinets, and making sure that they are level, plumb, and flush. Start by drawing a level line in pencil about 3 inches above the floor along your walls. Then you use this to find the floors highest point, if there even is one. Once you have it, measure up 34 ½ inches up from the highest point of the floor and make a level line from there all along the wall. This will be the top of the base cabinets.
Using the 34 ½ inch line as a new base, create a new level line 19 ½ inches above it to mark the base of the upper cabinets. You can now lightly mark the outlines of the cabinet placement if you want. Using a stud finder find and mark the centers of the studs so you will have a good guide for where to screw in the cabinets. You can also attach a temporary 1 x 3 support along the line indicating the base of the upper cabinets.
Install the upper cabinets with your helper making sure to screw them in according to your stud markings. Use shims as necessary to keep everything tidy. Then you can attach the bottom cabinets in the same manner using the shims to keep them level id the floor and walls are uneven.
After you are done installing kitchen cabinets you can look back and be proud that you did it all yourself.
